Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) manages one of the most challenging radioactive waste cleanup projects in the country. Our focus is reducing the environmental risk posed by 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. Join us today and be a part of history!

Are you passionate about environmental protection and making a real impact? Join the Closure and Interim Measures (C&IM) team, where you'll play a crucial role in closing tank farm facilities and safeguarding public health and the environment.

The C&IM group focuses on the field characterization, regulatory documentation, and technical analysis necessary for tank farm closure. Our work supports the Tank Farm Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action Program, involving field data collection, lab analyses, and risk assessments to address contamination issues from past tank leaks and releases, and RCRA Closure Plan development. Additionally, as part of interim measures, C&IM takes on initial response actions to reduce the impacts of tank leaks on the environment through the design of mitigation measures such as interim surface barriers.

In this role, you will be a key technical member of multi-disciplinary teams within C&IM and other WRPS groups. As a Scientist reporting to the Closure Regulatory Manager, you'll advance your career by collaborating with various WRPS functional groups, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Washington State Department of Ecology, and other stakeholders involved in Hanford Site Closure activities.

Support C&IM integrated teams as an individual contributor on the following activities:

  • Evaluation of environmental characterization data to determine the nature and extent of soil contamination and development of data quality objectives and work plans to characterize soils in tank farms.

  • Design and planning for tank farm interim measures and closure activities.

  • Evaluation of residual wastes in ancillary equipment in tank farm areas.

  • Evaluation interim measures, corrective measures, and closure technologies for their potential to advance the tank farms closure mission.

  • Ensure current interim measures are meeting design function, including participation in field walkdowns and inspections.

  • Evaluate interim measures vadose zone monitoring data to determine status and performance and document in annual reports and briefing materials.

  • Prepare presentation materials (e.g. PowerPoint, memorandums, white papers, etc.) to communicate project status of technical presentations.

  • Help to prepare solicitation documents (e.g. Statements of Work, technical specifications, etc.) that will be used to guide sub-contractors.

  • Help with the development of field work packages to guide field activities while ensuring regulatory requirements in work plans and sampling plans are achieved.

  • Assist with the preparation of regulatory and-or technical documentation to meet Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (HFFACO) requirements, conduct document research as required, support document reviews, and provide support for meetings among WRPS, DOE, Ecology, and/or stakeholder staff.

  • Integrate and collaborate with other technical organizations including sub-contractors, national labs, DOE, Ecology, and site contractor's staff to meet assigned work scope

  • Assist with preparation of regulatory documentation associated with RCRA and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) field investigations to characterize subsurface soils.

  • Comply with WRPS policies and procedures.

  • Ensure Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) Principles are incorporated into organization's activities.
