Job Title: Executive Director (Interim)

Reports to: Board of Trustees

This is a 12-month interim position, with a primary focus on ensuring stability and continuity during a period of leadership transition. The interim may be eligible to apply for the permanent role if mutually agreed upon.

Job Goals:

The Executive Director shall serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Board of Trustees and shall be responsible for the administration and supervision of the Laurel Education Group in accordance with board policies and New Jersey Statutes. The Executive Director directly or indirectly supervises every employee for the Laurel School, Newgrange School and the Robinowitz Education Center and is responsible for the corresponding facilities.

The position's purpose is to inspire and guide every member of the administrative, instructional, and support services teams in setting and achieving the highest standards of excellence, so that each individual student enrolled in the schools is provided with a complete valuable, meaningful and personally rewarding education.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsibly stewards the organization's fiscal and other resources, maintaining balanced budgets, meeting or exceeding revenue goals, and ensuring the continued health of the organization. Directs the preparation of the annual budgets for adoption by the board, and administers the board-approved budget, always acting in accordance with legal requirements and adopted board policy.
  2. Assumes primary responsibility for the organization's public relations, maintaining a presence in the community to create awareness for prospective families, develop productive relationships, and obtain resources for the school.
  3. Engages in regular and open two-way communication with families and the school community about the school program, students, needs, problems, and accomplishments.
  4. Develops and supports open, productive, caring, and trusting working relationships among administrators, faculty, and staff to motivate them to the highest levels of professional practice.
  5. Fosters continuous improvement of the organization to achieve its mission, vision, and core values through strategic planning, data collection and analysis, and by promoting coherence among improvement efforts in all aspects of the organization.
  6. Attends and participates in all meetings of the Board of Trustees, except when own appointment, contract, or salary is being considered. Serves as an ex-officio member of all board committees and acts as a professional advisor to the board. Prepares, in conjunction with the Board President, an agenda for all regular meetings of the Board of Trustees. Reports to the board on the conditions and needs of the system, the effectiveness of the policies and regulations under which the system is operating, the needs and achievements of the students, and trends in education.
  7. Supervises the effective implementation of all constitutional or statutory laws, state regulations, and board policies, including NJAC - 16A. Adheres to federal statutes and regulations, New Jersey school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Trustees policies and procedures, and contractual obligations. Advises the board on the need for new or revised policy and prepares drafts for Governance Committee review.
  8. Exercises power to make such rules and give such instruction to employees and students as may be necessary to implement board policy.
  9. Recommends promotion, appointment, transfer, or dismissal of all employees. Ensures the organization's recruitment, hiring, support, development, and retention practices result in an effective and caring professional staff and an educationally effective faculty.
  10. Assumes ultimate administrative responsibility for the health, safety, welfare, discipline, assignment, promotion, and retention of all students and maintains a safe, caring, and healthy school environment that meets the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of each student.
  11. Supervises the physical operation of the school and its facilities, developing and implementing strategic plans to ensure the facilities support the mission and vision of the organization. Approves the use of school facilities and equipment in alignment with school policies.
  12. Maintains, directly or through delegation, appropriate and adequate records for the organization, as required by the Board of Trustees, the State of New Jersey, and other legal agencies, such as personnel records, scholastic records, pupil records, and business and financial records. Protects the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and uses discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  13. Assumes responsibility for the general supervision of the instructional programs, including data collection essential to the efficient operation of the school system and the improvement of instruction. Recommends to the Board of Trustees the adoption of all courses of study, as well as the purchase of textbooks, instructional supplies, and equipment.
  14. Decides on emergency closings and/or openings of school.
  15. Communicates directly or indirectly all actions of the board relating to personnel matters to all employees. Directs the development of policies and procedures to accomplish the evaluation of all staff members.
  16. Assumes responsibility for the implementation of goals as set forth by the Board of Education. Formulates school objectives, policies, plans, and programs, and prepares (or causes to be prepared) and presents facts and explanations necessary to assist the board in its duty of legislation for the schools.
  17. Establishes and sustains a professional culture of engagement and commitment to a shared vision, goals, and objectives across the organization; high expectations for professional work; ethical and equitable practice; trust and open communication; collaboration, collective efficacy, and continuous individual and organizational learning and improvement.

Requirements

  • New Jersey School Administrator Certificate
  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or completion of a post-master's in Educational Leadership program.
  • 3+ years of School or District Administrative experience required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills,
  • Experience working with children with learning differences and autism.
Qualifications:
  • Prior experience as an interim leader or transition consultant strongly preferred.
  • Prior administrative experience in a state-approved special education school preferred.
  • Provide steady leadership and support through transition period.
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to quickly build trust with faculty, staff, students, families, and the Board.
