CITY OF BELLEVUE JOB DESCRIPTION Temporary position (90 day assignment) Hourly Rate $25.94 -$36.23 POSITION TITLE: Building Inspector
REPORTS TO: Chief Building Official
SUPERVISES: PURPOSE OF POSITION : Responsible for the performance of skilled inspection work and enforcing compliance with municipal building codes and ordinances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conducts proper and timely inspections of all building work for compliance with the adopted edition of the International Building Code, International Residential Code, applicable city ordinances, codes and the approved plans and specifications.
Reviews plans, specifications and other data to ensure plans meet the minimum requirements of the building code and zoning requirements.
Provides technical directions and assistance on all building inspections.
Coordinates inspections with specialists as required.
Responsible for uniform application and interpretation of the Uniform Building Code.
Investigates and resolves complaints received by the department from the public, concerning Permit and Inspection violations.
Makes recommendations to supervisor for improvements in field procedures, methods and policies.
Issues verbal or written orders for the correction of defects in materials, workmanship and other violations of codes and ordinances.
Determines if contractors have all the necessary permits and licenses to perform the requested
work.
Discusses repairs, alterations and new construction with owners and contractors.
Explains and interprets codes and regulations to owners, building contractors, government officials and the general public.
Works jointly with the Public Works Department in conducting ADA and Safety related inspections.
Conducts final inspections for certificates of occupancy.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: Assists in the effective operation of the office.
Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY: Knowledge of modern building construction practices, methods, materials and equipment.
Knowledge of the International Building & Residential Codes, city zoning codes and ordinances and related laws.
Knowledge of ADA standards and safety codes and regulations.
General knowledge of and ability to utilize computers and programs associated with the function of the division.
Ability to perform field inspections on new construction, alterations, repairs and remodels within the city limits and the extraterritorial jurisdiction.
Ability to enforce ordinances and other regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to establish effective working professional relationships with building contractors, owners, engineers, architects, government officials, fellow employees and the general public.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES: Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
AND
Five years of experience in building construction work.
Must possess a valid drivers' license at the time of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Must obtain Certification by the International Code Council as a building & residential inspector within one year of the date of hire.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is generally performed outdoors years round, periodically during inclement weather, at construction sites which may be dusty, noisy and hazardous. Job duties require a considerable
amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching and climbing. Incumbents must have the ability to transport themselves to and from inspection sites and to lift up to 50 lbs. Incumbents must also possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to physically access and maneuver on rough terrain and at construction sites to conduct inspections.
